Pirate Carols!

by Maureen O. Betita
Captain Silvestri paused at the entrance to Emily’s workroom, hearing her softly singing. The melody was familiar but the words were brand new. He smiled, listening to the story she cast in the melody…

The Cursed Quill came sailin’ in
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
The Cursed Quill came sailin’ in
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

And what was in this ship’s deep hold,
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve?
And what was in this ship’s deep hold,
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga?

Be gold and jewels and fabrics fine,
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
Be gold and jewels and fabric fine,
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

They sold them to the pirates there,
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
They sold them to the pirates there,
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

They made a tidy profit, too,
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
They made a tidy profit, too,
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

They knew the winter ball was nigh;
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
They knew the winter ball was nigh;
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

They also sold the rum and wine,
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
They also sold the rum and wine,
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

The Cursed Quill, she saved the best,
On Solstice Eve, on Solstice Eve;
The Cursed Quill, she saved the best,
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

Come the ball they outshone the rest
On Solstice Eve, On Solstice Eve;
With pockets plump and a merry cheer
On Solstice Eve in Tortuga.

She spun about, securing an earring in place and grinned at her husband. “I’m ready for the Pirate Ball!”

He admired her new dress, the color of old gold, shined to glow with experience. He held out his arm and they left the changing room. “I enjoyed your song. Quite accurate.”

“Well, I calls ‘em as I sees ‘em!” She laughed merrily. “I’m working on a version of Randolph the Scurvy Ridden Pirate and Rowdy Night, Tortuga Night.”

He shook his head in amusement, having no idea what she meant. The buzz from the grotto grew as they wove their way through the passages to the dance floor. Time to party!

…..

I love holiday parties! A chance to pull out the sparkle and glitter, shop for a new dress and pretty shoes. The pirates of the Kraken’s Caribbean hold a ball on the Solstice, and if anyone can strive to out-sparkle each other, it’s a bunch of pirates!

What would you wear, given anything in the world to choose from, to the pirate ball?

**A random comment will receive a sparkly chandelier ornament and some swag from the Kraken’s Caribbean series. (Residents outside the USA will receive a giftcard from Amazon.)**

  1. Ha ha - nice carol. What would I wear to a pirate ball? A wedding dress. A red one! I saw one when I was helping my daughter choose hers and I really really wanted it.

  2. To a pirate ball? Hmmmm Definitely a corset (must put the girls on display as best as I can), and a lovely bustle skirt to hid the daggers tucked into my boots, as well as bloomers underneath in case I need to ditch the skirt for fighting, fleeing or anything else that might come up unexpectedly.

  3. I would wear a stunning deep purple,satiny ball gown. It would be off the shoulders with a sweetheart neckline. I would wear beautiful,creamy pearl jewelry. My hair would be upswept with pearls and diamonds scattered throughout.

    Merry Christmas!!

  4. Barbara - A red wedding dress would be quite appropriate! Be sure to bedazzle it to the nines, the pirates of the Kraken's Caribbean adores shine!

    Seleste! - They'll all want ta dance wit' you! And it's always a toss up...bloomers in case you need to run/no bloomers in case you meet someone...nice.

    Michelle - I like your tastes in ball gowns. And pearls...how I love pearls! Just be sure to carry some weaponry in case any of the lads forget to keep to parlay!

  6. The dress Kate Middleton wore the other day--the black velvet strapless mermaid-skirted gown! LOVELY! And if I could wear those diamonds as well, that'd be glorious!

  7. I would wear a deep purple gown, with a fitted bodice that is low cut, and a full skirt. And of course some great treasures, diamonds & amethysts set in gold.
    Happy holidays!

  9. I would wear a blood red colored low-cut gown with ruby clips in my hair, around my neck, and hanging from my ear lobes. Underneath I'd definitely have thigh high leather boots with a knife strapped to my thigh as well. Can't be too safe around those pirates.

  10. Elaing8 - Yer gonna drive the mates crazy!

    Hellion - Oh, that were lovely! Not sure I'd go for the mermaid bottom, I like to spread those legs...when dancing!

    June, June, June! Ladies! All those diamonds! I see Silvestri better hire some guards for all of Emily's guests!

    Booklover...low cut is the style! All those tall pirates will be so pleased to look down into your...eyes...as you waltz!

    Joder - With that outfit you may draw the attention of the local vampires!

  11. I'd have to say I would also wear blood red...skirt with a black corset... the Solstice Ball would be all about my cleavage. of course I would be wearing a few deep purple amethysts, a few jeweled daggers and perhaps a stake in the corset in case the vampires get too frisky! ;)

  12. ;-) Teresa...I'm not sure a stake would work on the vampires of the Kraken's Caribbean...but it might be fun to watch you try...

    I love deep purple amethysts...and daggers.

  13. I would wear a Gold gown trimmed in silvery red and emerald green. I would have red rubies and emeralds sprinkled throughout my upswept hair. As with everyone else, gotta hide those daggers somewhere too.

  15. It would definitely have to be a sparkly gown! But I would make sure to have a dagger hidden underneath just in case. ;)

  16. I've always thought it'd be fun to attend one of those. I like dancing. I'm no good at it. But I still try. Problem is finding a partner. XD

    Love this grown. Problem is, no sleeves. I like sleeves.

    But I'm more Steampunk in style. So I'd probably buck tradition and go for something like this.

  17. Elena - everyone carries weapons to the ball. They are seldom used, as it is a celebration and no one wants to be THE PIRATE who ruined the ball! Plus the vampires do tend to keep the peace...

    Allison...uh...wow. To all of them...

  18. To a pirate ball, I would have to wear a gown with a full flowing skirt and a tight corset like bodice to keep the girls high & tight. Probably in a deep purple satin with silver trim. My hair will be up & my shoulders bare so that my naughty pirate captain can nibble on my neck while we are gliding around the room.
