Holidays in Las Vegas

by C.R. Moss

Before DH and I moved out to Las Vegas, we’d visit the city on a regular basis. When we finally made the decision to relocate, we came out over a Thanksgiving weekend to look at homes. Talk about turkey overload. Hubby and I went to two different buffets that day! The first one was around lunch time. We ate at the Carnival World Buffet overat the Rio. Lots of food, great seafood and of course we had our share of the Tom bird. Later that day, actually into the evening when we realized we were hungry again (yes, hours later…lol!) we went to the buffet in the hotel we were staying in and had a second Turkey day meal. I’m amazed we didn’t pass out at the table or have to be rolled out of the dining area! During our visit to where would soon become our hometown, we drove around getting the lay of the land. Here’s a pic of what once was the 215 – Summerlin Parkway interchange.Since that trip, the highways have been redone, and there’s no traffic light to contend with. Yay! Now that we live here, we’ve found different buffets to eat at, or if friends are available, we have dinner at their house or ours. This year we’re the hosts.

But Thanksgiving isn’t the only rockin’ holiday in Las Vegas. There’s Halloween with people roaming the strip in their costumes, and skits occurring outside of Madame Tussauds.

Then there’s the December holiday season. A tree is put up downtown.
The Bellagio has their Conservatory & Botanical Gardens done up in a holiday theme

Other casinos and business gussy themselves up in the spirit of the season, too. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that the weather is absolutely gorgeous!

And, let’s not forget New Year’s! One year hubby, my sister and I braved the downtown area for the New Year’s Eve party. Thousands of people. Lots of booze. Two stages with different bands playing. It was an event! And, while over the strip fireworks went off at midnight, downtown had the light show playing on the Fremont Experience canopy (warning, there’s sound with this link: http://www.vegasexperience.com/)
See? Las Vegas can be an interesting place to live, and it’s not all about the gaming. :)
Granted, now that we live in a place that we used to vacation to, people wonder what we do for trips. Well, we’ve traveled for hubby’s races. I’ve traveled for writing conventions/conferences/meetings. We’ve also been on a couple of cruises. One was in the Caribbean. On that trip, we made it to Grand Cayman, spent a few hours on Seven Mile Beach and ate at a little beachfront pub, which I have ended up loosely using as the place where my two characters meet in my upcoming 1NS story, Sunset Desires. It’s sex on the beach, and I’m not talking about the drink!

**For my drawing, I’m giving away a cover flat of Sunset Desires signed by me and cover model, Jimmy Thomas. International entries are eligible.**

Happy Holidays & Safe Travels!

  1. I have never been to Vegas but I do remember one New Year's Eve in Reno with my DH. The streets were jammed with people at midnight, the lights were amazing, the snow was beautiful and we just happened to conceive our first son that night so it was quite memorable.

  2. The Belagio looks beautiful at Christmas. It's hard for me to think of Christmas without snow though, but I live in Canada. LOL Happy Holidays!

  4. Wow, it looks beautiful! I've been to Vegas a few times but never at Christmas. As for everlasting buffets - yes, I know EXACTLY what you mean. Too easy to keep eating - and I never leave room for dessert.

  8. I would LOVE to visit Vegas! There's so much more there than gambling as you show. And I LOVE buffets with all that variety. I actually have an elastic waist banded pair of pants that I refer to as my buffet pants that I always wear when going to eat at a buffet.

And thanks for the chance to win a piece of that hottie Jimmy!

  11. I love the decorations for Christmas. Driving through the neighborhoods with the kids and listening to the oohs and aahs in the backseat.

  13. I live in Vegas too. Holidays are a different animal here. They have the traditional stuff but they also have the Pimps and Hos' Ball and the Fetish Fantasy Ball. I love taking my daughter to the Bellagio every year. We love the atrium. It took a while to get used to a neon Christmas, now it's as normal as cranberry sauce and turkey.

  14. Hi Elena, Books & Katie! Thanks for stopping by!
Our development does a house decorating contest and then Opportunity Village does a Magical Forest: http://www.opportunityvillage.org/magical_forest.php & I agree, holidays are a different animal here. (I missed going and sitting outside the FFBall this year to see all the costumes.) & there usually isn't snow & it's usually not too cold. but there are things to get you in the spirit.

  19. I've only been to Vegas once, and sadly I didn't get to see as much as I would have liked. I'm going to keep pestering my hubs and my girlfriends until I get to go back with SOMEONE LOL. I just absolutely love the energy of that city. <3

  20. I've never done Vegas at Christmas, but I guess it DOES lend itself naturally to bright and cheery!

Weirdest holiday I spend was Christmas in Palm Springs with husband's grandparents. It's the desert (weird for a native Midwestern girl!) and we had dinner at the casino buffet (rather than with the big family around at Grandma's). Memorable, but so different than what I was used to!

    Thanks for sharing, CR!

  21. Hi Seleste & HB!
Maybe we should have a DP get together/reunion here in town someday... That would give employees/authors/readers a great excuse to come and visit. ;)

  22. The last time I actually spent TIME in Vegas was in 1986. Summer. LOVED it!! ALtho, I could have done without the lounge lizard who tried to pick me up while I was at a slot machine. :p My uncle, God rest his soul, came over to me and put his arm around me and kissed my head. He said: Hey, baby, hows it going? The guy could NOT get away fast enough! LOL!!!!!!!!!! I was 20. I was SO clueless at the time! LOL!

    Have a great Christmas!

  23. I have never been to Vegas. I don't do crowds or gamble so I have just never had the urge to go. It does look like it would be fun though, I love that it is a "night" place, I tend to be a night owl anyway.
    Have a wonderful holiday season.
